TISA is run by a voluntary board with Chairperson Hassen Lorgat. Board member and staff member profiles can be found below.
Hassen Lorgat

I was expelled from teachers training college during 1977, in the midst of the struggles that was sparked by the 1976 students unrest. I had just completed my first year at teachers college. Thereafter I took a host of small jobs, (Bank Clerk) and then the public library where I began to cut my teeth in basic unionism. We struggled for years to change bureaucratic union leadership.
During the years of my expulsion, I continued to study via correspondence finishing eventually a BA (Hon) majoring in History and Sociology. During 1989/90 I completed a MA (in Sociology of Labour) - masters degree in England (Warwickshire). When I returned, coincidentally I was appointed General Secretary of the union which, 10 years ago, we were trying to democratise - this was in the municipal sector. After 2 years I then joined the COSATU affiliated municipal union. (But before that I went to work for the Metal Union which later became the National Union of Metalworkers union (NUMSA) a leading union in SA for about 5 years.)
I then left to work for the Public Services International, as it's Southern Africa co-ordinator, tasked with starting up the International Public Workers Trade Union office in our region. After 4 years, left and did some voluntary work with a campaign group I started calling Friends of Public Broadcaster. I was a founder member of the Workers Library and Museum in late 1980's. I’ve been active and continue to be active in workers culture. I'm also a serving Board member of the anti-corruption body - Transparency International - in its South African chapter, as chairperson.
I love sport, doing gym regularly. I'm a practising karateka and an avid football lover, having played once. I love and collect books, and am not sure if I still have a sense of humour after all these years in the union movement.
I am the former media officer of the teachers union SADTU and served as the writer – editor and of its regular publication - The Educators Voice - (ten times per annum) and was responsible for the website www.sadtu.org.za.
Also serve as head of secretariat - GCE-SA, and have been recently (March 2004) appointed as Manager Media and Communications – for the SA NGO Coalition (SANGOCO).
